Our Story
The Oromoo Readers Society (ORS) | Hawaasa Duubistoota Oromoo (HDO) is a passionate community dedicated to reconnecting the global Oromoo diaspora through the power of reading. Founded by Barsiisaa Samuel, a dedicated educator, ORS was born out of a desire to empower young Oromoos to rediscover their heritage and engage in critical thinking.
Inspiring Stories:
Barsiisa Samuel's journey began with his virtual Afaan Oromoo classes, where he encountered remarkable students. One, a young person rediscovered her roots after their family was displaced by slavery over 200 years ago. Another, a successful actor, overcame the pressure to abandon her native tongue. And another, born and raised abroad, held onto her fluency thanks to her grandmother's stories.
A Catalyst for Change:
These inspiring encounters led to a pivotal moment. On February 25, 2022, three students from the Ittu-Humbannaa tribe, Saartuu Muhammed, Antu Yacob, and Taylor A. Little, discussed the importance of Afaan Oromoo during an Oromo Legacy Leadership & Advocacy Association (OLLAA) live discussion. Witnessing their passion, Barsiisa Samuel was filled with renewed purpose. He knew he had to act to bridge the gap between generations and prevent the erosion of Oromoo heritage.
Education as a mean:
Inspired by the experience of the three individuals, Barsiisa Samuel started ORS | HDO. He began with a small group of seven students, reading Dr. Paulo Freire's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" to unlock a new understanding of their history and identity. He chose this text as it was a book gifted to him by his professor, which he believed was the best starting point to educate young Oromoos why the state of Oromoo affairs is as it is.
Combating Discrimination through Reading:
The ORS recognizes that the discrimination and marginalization faced by the Oromoo people stems from a complex history. To combat these issues, they aim to build a rational and dialogical society through the culture of book reading. They believe that by studying language, history, and factual accounts, young Oromoos can gain a deeper understanding of their heritage and work towards a brighter future.
